Since the day we launched the Be the Mentor initiative just 3 years ago, we have grown our community of everyday heroes to over 8,000 participants who have taken the pledge and helped someone in their life.
It’s always easy to say you’ll do something and then never do it. Like exercising or reading – you know it’s probably the right thing to do instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram for a couple of hours. The same could be said for mentoring. When you’re busy, it’s hard to have to think about being a role model for someone else.
It is often said, in South Africa, that the youth are our future; this couldn’t be more true. It is also understood that a lot of our youth are on troubled paths, without the guidance to help them see just how bright their future can be. The 18+ Be the Mentor platform provides a place where we can start making a change within communities and give hope to the young kids who don’t know any different from what their reality is.
Motivating your mentee to pursue their passion is not always an easy task. Whether it is self-expression through dance or art, sport, writing or singing. There will be many days when they feel like the world is against them. But that is your task, as a mentor, to remind them and guide them to greatness.
