Happy holidays mentors and change-makers! We hope 2017 has been a successful year, and that you all have a happy festive season.
Before we sign off for a well-deserved holiday, be aware that December is a tricky period for young people to navigate. Without purpose and routine, it’s easy to slip into bad habits. Research suggests that underage drinking spikes to its highest peak in December every year.
Make sure that you set the right kind of example this festive season; your responsibilities to the people around you don’t take any time off.
IT STARTS WITH YOU.
The holiday spirit is infectious, and while it’s completely okay to enjoy the festivities¬– stay mindful of who is watching you. Young people are impressionable, and our actions, no matter the intention, can have far reaching consequences.
Celebrate responsibly, and set a good example.
DON’T BE BORING.
Stay occupied. We’re far more likely to make right decisions when we aren’t looking for ways to pass the time. Ensure your mentee has a schedule that is jam-packed with activities to kill time in a memorable and wholesome way.
EYE ON THE PRIZE.
Whilst it may not be the popular decision, don’t leave your mentor to their own devices. Always ensure a responsible adult has an eye on what’s going on.
START PREPARING NOW.
A great way to use your time wisely, is to start preparing for 2018 early. Helping them set some goals and plan for a productive year ahead, will help them stay focused during the times that they could be tempted to make the wrong choices.
Remember the goals we set for 2017? How did you do? The progress you and your mentor made this year is valuable. Don’t give it all up for nothing.
Finish 2017 strong, so that you can start 2018 on the right foot. See you in 2018.
