SEIZING

THE MOMENT

TEACH YOUR MENTEES HOW TO GRAB OPPORTUNITIES WITH BOTH HANDS.

People speak about opportunity as the one thing that stands between them and greatness.

Others may say that if you work hard, you can create your own opportunities. Regardless, one thing is for sure; opportunity unlocks the next stage in life.

As a young person, your mentee is faced with a number of opportunities to grow themselves and their talents. What are some of the key things they need to remember, so they can make the most of their opportunities? Find out below.

THEY’RE THE KEY PLAYER

People believe that their circumstances define where they will end up. Some people even believe that they don’t have a say in where their lives are going, like the world is the driver and they are just passengers. The truth is you are in the driver’s seat and you get to determine which path your life is taking. Teach your mentee that they are the key players and they can shape their lives to their desire, regardless of their circumstances. This will make them open their eyes to key opportunities which they can use to improve their lives.

POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS

Viewing life through the lens of where you currently are, restricts you from seeing where you can go and what you can achieve. The world is filled with endless possibilities, especially for young people. As their mentor, you should teach them to look beyond their current circumstances so they can find opportunities to grow. After seeing the endless possibilities, they will start seeing how they can use their talents to get them anywhere they want to be and do anything they want to do.

THEY SHOULD MOVE SWIFTLY

“The early bird catches the worm.”

John Ray

As soon as people spot opportunities, they should act. A sense of urgency is one of the key lessons you should impart to your mentee. As soon as they see where they want to be, they should sit down with you, set out the skills/talents they have or need to acquire and which can be used to achieve their objective, prepare a timeline and act. Not taking action quickly enough allows room for doubts to grow and your mentee will start second guessing their abilities.

Growing up isn’t just about becoming older in terms of age, it’s also about moving from one stage of life to the next and developing yourself as you go.

There is a young person who believes their circumstances have determined their life for them. This is your opportunity to change their lives.
