It can be as simple as a high five or a smile and thumbs up – positive reinforcement is small acts of kindness that help you and your mentee build a stronger 'REALationship'.
EFFECTIVE BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION
By using positive reinforcement, you can help your mentee develop and grow the habit of making positive choices based on your advice.
"Reinforcement is the process of encouraging or establishing a belief or pattern of behaviour, especially by encouragement or reward." – Demi Oba, Reward Psychology.
These awards can range from small positive acknowledgements, like a pat on the back or a high five for when your mentee achieves something, to more tangible awards like movie tickets or a desired garment.
Other actions to consider is sharing your mentee's achievements with your and your mentee's communities whether directly or online. Be proud of your mentoring progress and be proud of your mentee. This shows them that you truly care and believe in them. It also helps grow and re-inforce their self-esteem and confidence.
KNOW WHAT MOTIVATES THEM
Positive reinforcement inspires action. By talking to your mentee and finding out what motivates them and what makes them happy, you can use these as rewards once they've achieved it.
The key is to keep encouraging your mentee and reminding them about the reward they can obtain. Remember though to set a reasonable timeline to reach milestones so they are not set-up to fail with unreasonable times within which to achieve their goals.
